Franky's Oscar Picks Part II - 2013 Edition

Best Visual Effects:

• The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
• Life of Pi
• Marvel’s The Avengers
• Prometheus
• Snow White and the Huntsman

I swear I couldn’t be more torn here. On one end, Life of Pi demonstrates precisely what big budgeted visual effects can accomplish for storytelling through artistic means. Like Hugo last year, it’s part of an emerging sub-genre of 3D films that exhibit a sense of careful artistry in its 3D implementation. Renown and veteran directors challenging themselves with a 3D feature is probably the most exciting thing to come out of Hollywood in a while (here’s to hoping Danny Boyle or Aronofsky tackle it next…). Now with that being said, does this render classic Hollywood blockbusting features and the extravagant big budgeted chaos, completely obsolete and unworthy of enjoyment for us film buffs? The Avenger’s says NO. NOT AT ALL. As a matter of fact, bring on those beautifully rendered explosions and the best looking green super hero monster half a million can buy! I frankly, can’t get enough of it. I’d argue that the craftsmanship of some of those impeccably designed battle sequences possess the same, if not JUST as much artistic merit to them. The special effects were impossibly good, to the point that I couldn’t believe what was besetting my eyes as I sat in the theater with tears streaming down my face because all those fight sequences I realized with action figures when I was a kid were now happening in real time right in front of me. And it’s all mostly thanks to the visual effects crew. I was prepared to call one film “spellbinding” and the other “marvelous” when I started writing this and now I can’t really tell which adjective I originally intended to describe which. Both are Visual Effects masterpieces and compelling arguments for the continued expenditure of masses of money that could be spent feeding 3rd world countries.

Who I would give the Award to: The Avengers, no, Life of Pi, no no The Avengers, oh wait definitely Life of Pi, ok ok The Life of Avengers Pi. There.

Franky's Oscar Picks Part I - 2013 Edition

Best Supporting Actor:

• Alan Arkin – Argo
• Robert Deniro – Silver Lining’s Playbook
• Phillip Seymour Hoffman – The Master
• Tommy Lee Jones – Lincoln
• Cristoph Waltz – Django: Unchained

Something notable about this year’s crop of Supporting Actor nominees is that all of these fine blokes (been watching Hugh Jackman interviews all day, sorry) have actually WON Acting Oscar’s before. Can’t say I remember the last time I heard about a category entirely dominated with “veterans” so to speak, but you can just imagine the kind of talent competing for this award this year, if you haven’t already done yourself the favor of watching these films. I absolutely loved all of these performances but if you pointed a gun at my head and made me choose one (you sadist) I think I’d have to go with Robert DeNiro in SLP (pompously abbreviate movie titles: check). The last time Robert DeNiro acted this good everyone was playing a Super Nintendo and gas prices were cheaper than Jr Bacon Cheeseburgers, and I for one welcome his return to legitimacy as a dramatic actor with open arms. But truthfully, I’d be fine with anybody else winning EXCEPT Alan Arkin in Argo. Although it was a stand out performance that provided the much needed comedic relief for the film, it isn’t anywhere near the caliber of the other nominees. It’s like the Ringo Starr of the group here. Your solo album was great man… but you’re just not one of the other guys. - Who I’d give the Award to: Robert DeNiro -

As most of the entertainment news media (and female friends) will assure you, Anne Hathaway’s performance in Les Misérables is *gasp* AMAZING! Like, the best performance of all time! Just give her the Oscar already!.... And I guess I could somewhat agree that she deserves to take the gold statue home on Oscar night (despite dreading the thought of having to hear another one of her unbearable overly perky speeches again)… but quite frankly, her performance, like that guy with perfect personality and great career you won’t marry, is just TOO SHORT. It’s undeniably one of the best onscreen, no-holds-barred, completely-going-bananas-and-losing-it meltdowns in acting history… but it all transpires so fast and it’s over all too soon. Plus it’s very ‘SHOWY’. I’ve always been a sucker for subtler performances. Jackie Weaver’s for example. As much as I hate looking like the biggest SLP fanboy ever (which I assure you, I’m not) by picking two performances from the same film back to back, I just can’t’ deny the level of satisfaction Jackie Weaver’s role brought me. Playing the compassionate, humble, and noble mother not unlike any of ours was so precise and quietly stood out among all the flashy and loud performances the film had, oftentimes in the same scene. Jackie Weaver wasn’t this hot, crazy, outspoken or sassy lady telling everyone off. She was an adorable lady who loved cooking for her family and providing the only effort for sanity amongst all the dysfunction, even if nobody around her knew it or gave her credit for it. It was like a testament to all the true mothers out there and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who noticed the brilliance of it. Should Sally Field take this though, I’d be happy as well. - Who I’d give the Award to: Jackie Weaver -

Franky's Oscar Picks: 2013 Edition (Intro)

I remember being 7 years old when my two older brothers took me to the movies to watch ‘Batman & Robin’ at 10:10. The specific show time stuck with me all these years and it’s not because I possess some skill of remarkable recollection or anything; frankly I don’t remember much else about that night. Don’t remember what I wore, or the day of the week it was or even much about the actual quality of the film (more on that later) but I never forgot the particular time slot. Perhaps it’s because I was so excited. At 10:10, as in the number 10 twice, I’ll have begun seeing ‘Batman & Robin’ and it was going to be the best movie ever.

Except - apparently - according to both of my overly vocal brothers as soon as we exited the theater, it wasn’t. It actually SUCKED. Bad. A big ole stinker. Proclamations of resentment blaring like French horns at the frontline of a battle march, copious of “this was cheesy” or “that was ridiculous” or “George Clooney hahahaha George Clooney!” ensued. And despite the only other thing I remember that night, which was that I LIKED IT, I recall feeling compelled to share in on this hatred for this clearly putrid form of filmmaking, guising itself as watchable entertainment.

I didn’t want to like something that nobody else did.

That’s when my problem started. For years after that, following the discovery of a section of VHS tapes (ask your cool gen-x uncle if you’re wondering) at the local Wal-Mart that was exclusive to “Award Winners”, I dabbled in the knowingness of what unmistakably HAD to be “good taste”. With all credit due to the box art, if ‘Saving Private Ryan’ had been nominated for a whopping 11 Academy Awards, winning 5, well it just HAD to be good. Hell, some completely unappealing movie with an old man on the cover and a title I couldn’t pronounce (‘Gandhi’, respectively) had been nominated for 11 and won 8! People probably went around stabbing each other in the face at how excited they were about this film! Surprised there isn't a national holiday commemorating the release of this stroke of genius.

Summer Movie Mania Returns this Saturday Aug. 25

The 2012 Summer Movie Mania Series, presented by Carlos Cabrera and MCP Events, continues this weekend on Saturday, August 25th, with the showing of the beloved family film 'Despicable Me'. RGV Independent Film Premieres this Saturday in Mission

Rio Grande Valley independent filmmaker Knives Monroe will debut his film 'Her Doppelgänger' at a "one-night only" premier event this Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the historic Border Theater in Mission Texas.

The film's plot revolves around twin sisters Miandra and Melissa, and their conflict associated with the eating disorder bulimia. "I made this movie for women." states Monroe . "I made this movie for a subculture of women who are battling a specific eating disorder (bulimia) because they've never had a movie to call their own that talks about the subject matter clearly and truthfully. I hope this movie provides them with a voice, because they are voiceless."

The showing will begin at 7:15 p.m., and admission will be $7, per adult. Children under 12-years of age will be granted free admission.

Film Synopsis
Bulimia. It consumes mind, body, and soul. A story of twin sisters. Miandra, no longer able to cover-up her haunting secret, and Melissa who protects her sister’s secret at all costs. What happens when a lie becomes the only truism in their lives? If less is more, then nothing is everything. Her Doppelgänger is a film about the depth of burdens, the scars the word ugly leaves behind, and the courage it takes to endure the punishment you don’t deserve.

Free Movie Event this Sunday at Local Wildlife Refuge

On Sunday, August 19, 2012 the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo Texas will host a 'Free Movie' event fearing the family film 'We Bought a Zoo'. The event begins at 2:00 p.m., and guest are encouraged to show-up early for a brief presentation explaining the differences between a Zoo, and a Wildlife refuge.

The Muddzilla track featured such obstacles as mud pits, an ice-water dive, barbed-wire crawls, electrified-wire huts. Rio Grande Valley Documentary Filmmaker; Christian Salinas

Editor's Note: This article is a continuation of our “Cast and Crew” biography series.

Christian started working with video since he got his hands on his first Magnavox VHS camcorder some time in the early 90's (which he still has in his closet), and has been working with video in some way or another ever since.

Although he's been recognized for some of his work in narrative filmmaking, Christian largely dedicates his efforts to documentary work, and multi-media journalism. Throughout his career, he has documented, community and sporting events, and has helped many Rio Grande Valley organizations create awareness, and promote their efforts through various forms of online digital media.

He currently serves as head filmmaker at BPS Films, and as editor-in-chief for one of the Rio Grande Valley's only truly-independent news outlets; RGHerald.com

MAD Fashion Event 2012 Held in Weslaco Texas

As part of their continuing efforts to organize family-friendly community events the Model Citizen Promotions organization, headed by Carlos Cabrera, hosted the MAD Fashion Event held at Savory Perks Cafe in Weslaco Texas on July, 21. 2012.

The event kicked-off with live musical performances by Corine Garcia, David C., Esteban Padilla, and other featured guests, followed by “Birds of Prey” runway fashion show featuring designs by local fashion and jewelery designers Maria Antonia Palacios, and Nadia Baughman. A notable highlight of the runway show was a Shoe Make-Over competition for which contestant Stephanie Brake of Rio Grande City, was voted first place. The event concluded with a spirited live performance by Damian LPC & Markkeyz.

BPS Films Mini-Doc Highlights Library's Efforts to Preserve History

After a lifetime of service, The Rio Grande Herald, Rio Grande City's official newspaper of record stopped printing in 2010. After the newspaper's closing, the Herald's last editor Kenneth Roberts, decided to donate the Herald's archive copies to the Rio Grande City Public Library. RGC's Library director Norma Gomez Fultz then immediately began the process of preserving the unique and irreplaceable newspaper archive, a process that inevitably took over two-years to complete.

The Library's efforts resulted in the production of an online searchable database of the Rio Grande Herald's newspaper archive spanning from the year 1972 - 2010. You can explore the archive by visiting the Rio Grande City Public Library's website, or by going directly to the archive database.

Rio Grande Valley Filmmakers; Gerald Salinas

Editor's Note: I was in the middle of updating our "About Us" page when I got a better idea; I thought it would be a little more interesting to post up short Bio's of our crew, cast members from recent projects, and other people/groups we've had the privilege of working with over the years. I figured why not start with the most public figure of our little operation, the "Marathon Man" himself... Gerald Salinas

Gerald S. Salinas has been with Border Perspective from the very beginning. After attending The Art Institute of Dallas, Gerald returned to the Rio Grande Valley where he worked as the official film critic for the local newspaper in print at the time; The Rio Grande Herald, and he continues to serve as a guest blogger for the publication's website/blog.

Gerald began experimenting with filmmaking by shooting a few short films with friends, and eventually moved on to critical success directing the science fiction short-film The Inevitable, for which Gerald received multiple awards including "1st Place" and "Best Action".

Currently, Gerald has decided to take on some of the toughest challenges the Rio Grande Valley has to offer by signing up for local Marathon Events, and documenting his adventures in Border Perspective's first official web-series "Marathon Man".

Rio Grande Valley Short Films; The Alternative Revisited

The Alternative is what we could now classify as our "Break-Out Film", it's officially the first short film we ever made using the traditional filmmaking process, in other words, it's the first time we actually took the time to write a script, story-board, cast and actually set-up lighting. It only took about a day to shoot, but it ended up taking well over a month to edit.

The Alternative is also the first short film we submitted into a film competition, and much to our surprise, we actually ended up winning some awards for it including "Best Director" and "Best Cinematography". Winning those awards meant a lot to us at the time, but it wasn't until years later that I fully understood just how important this film is to me personally.  The success of The Alternative helped me understand that anything is, in fact, possible as long as we put serious effort into completing any goal we set out for ourselves.
